Verification Code / Account Takeover
"Read me the code you just got" — to hijack your account.
How this scam works
A caller or message — often pretending to be a friend, a colleague, or 'support' for WhatsApp, Zoom, Google, or a bank — gets a verification/login code sent to YOUR phone, then asks you to read it back. The moment you share it, they take over your account (and use it to scam your contacts).
🚩 Red flags
- •Anyone asking you to read back a code that was texted to you.
- •A 'friend' urgently needing a code they 'accidentally sent to you'.
- •Fake support claiming they need your code to 'verify' or 'reactivate' you.
- •Pressure to do it fast, before you can think or check.
✅ What to do
Never share a verification or login code with anyone — real companies and real friends never need it. If a 'friend' asks, contact them another way; their account is likely hacked.
